Friday Finds -- 8/14

This meme is hosted over at Should Be Reading.

This week my find comes from Entertainment Weekly. It is The Magicians by Lev Grossman. Here is the Barnes and Noble description:

At once psychologically piercing and magnificently absorbing, The Magicians boldly moves into uncharted literary territory, imagining magic as practiced by real people, with their capricious desires and volatile emotions. Lev Grossman creates an utterly original world in which good and evil aren't black and white, love and sex aren't simple or innocent, and power comes at a terrible price.

Sounds utterly fantastic, doesn't it?

That does sound fantastic. I just finished the first two books in the YA SciFi series Gone (and loved them) and I'm really craving some more good SciFi. Thanks for the find.

My former co-worker enjoyed this. She described it as being like Harry Potter for adults. I don't know if that's accurate, since I haven't read it, but it has made the book stand out in my mind.

I was semi-disappointed with The Magicians. It has amazing parts but it feels a little bit dry at points. It's really very different than Harry Potter which I think I should have kept in mind going into it. It's GOOD just not wonderful. I think the general conclusion, though is that it's amazing, so enjoy!

(my review is here for after you've finished reading...no spoilers but I can't read a review of a book while I'm reading the book or it puts ideas in my head! http://iwriteinbooks.wordpress.com/2009/07/25/the-magicians-lev-grossman/)
